I have to say first that there were times reading this book where I was annoyed at the writer. He seemed to enjoy going off on long, frequent descriptions of living in Polynesia and being lazy. He is poetic in his writing, but I got frustrated sometimes that it felt like he was trying to fill pages wandering off in long descriptions.
This being said...this book, I feel, has changed my life. For the first half of it I was wondering what the heck all the amazing reviews were for- the author basically spends an entire book telling you how much better sex is when you're slow, lazy, present and relaxed. And this is true. But somewhere along the way, something clicked for me. I tried the method. I realized, that day, that in my relationship with my partner of five years, I have been the one limiting our sex life. I have treated sex as a task, something to hurry through so I could get back to studying or doing whatever I was doing before, without recognizing that in myself. I have tried to squeeze it into my day, not to enjoy it necessarily but simply to do it because it needed to be done. Not that I didn't enjoy it, of course, but I had come to the conclusion that sex was good, so why bother putting in any effort to make it better?
I have since bought several books on tantra and am currently looking at making it a lifestyle. Sex with my partner is so much more special than it was even a month ago before I read this book, and I feel forever indebted to the author for sharing these beautiful ideas of sex and love with the masses. The ideas are not new, nor are they entirely unique, but they are CERTAINLY not encouraged or taught in Western culture, so I am immensely grateful for the exposure. I highly recommend reading the book, exploring the method (simple as it may be, it can be a challenge to re-train yourself from what you've learned sex is!) and reading more if you feel so inclined!

I first read this when my girlfriend asked me to look into "Polynesian sex". I had never heard this term, even though we were both students of Tantra. She had read about it in a Japanese book called 12 Chapters on Love. Checking into it, I quickly traced the "Polynesian sex" teachings in Japan to the writings of James Powell, and then found this book.
James Powell writes poetically, beautifully, and educationally about love, sex, relationships, Polynesian culture, pop-Polynesian Tiki/exotica culture, meditation, neurochemistry, and even on Paul Gauguin in Slow Love: A Polynesian Pillow Book. While poetic and informative, the suggestions found here are also very practical, as well as adaptable... meaning, there is no requirement to follow a strict set of rules; there are instead some flexible guidelines that when followed, even partially or lightly, have the potential to transform individuals and relationships. His chapter on meditation, titled "On Doing Nothing", is truly one of the most brilliantly written pieces on practical meditation I have ever read.
Powell's earlier book, Energy and Eros, sparked the "Polynesian sex" movement in Japan. This book has the potential for sparking revolutions in the lives of individuals and people in romantic and sexual relationships, regardless of the gender mix of the participants.
